Page 81 of Run to Me

Lia stares down at me with a calculating glint in her eye that I’ve never seen before.

“L-Lia?” I stammer.

“Hey bestie.” She grins, but it’s not the grin I’m used to. It’s a grin I’ve seen my husband wear when he talks about what he gets up to at work, a grin that he would never use towards me.

“What’s going on?”

“We haven’t seen each other in a while, so I know we have some catching up to do… you should probably know, I have a new boyfriend.”

Where the hell is she going with this? And why does she have me chained to a goddamn wall in an empty bedroom?

I decide to play along with whatever game she’s playing. “Okay… who’s your new boyfriend?”

She makes a tsk-ing sound. “I don’t think you’ll approve, but that’s just too fucking bad. Princess Robyn seems to be getting everything she wants lately… the rich husband, the powerful family,” she sneers. “But anyways, you won’t have them for long. See, my boyfriend and I decided we were fucking sick of seeing yourperfect life, so we figured,” she pauses to pop a shoulder in a half shrug, “why not do something about it?”

I have no freaking idea what is going on, but it’s clear my best friend isn’t who I thought she was. Everyone always talks about how Enzo is crazy, and I’ve always enjoyed his brand of insane. Lia’s type of crazy? Not so much.

“I don’t understand,” I whisper more to myself than her.

“What’s not to understand?” The new voice startles me, and I recoil in shock as my brother enters the room.

“Little miss sunshine always got what she wanted. You had our parents wrapped around your little finger, never the one to be in trouble. You always had everything easy. And then you go and get your fuckinghusbandto destroy my plans by having him destroy those idiots who I stole from.” His hard gaze looks me up and down before he continues, “Luckily for me, my time spent with the Blue Vipers wasn’t a complete waste and I managed to make good with some of their contacts… so I’m setting up my own business andyouwill be my first sale.” He shoots me a grin full of malice as Lia stares at him in awe and I let what he just said sink in.

My best friend and my brother are fucking crazy.

My brother wants to start trafficking people.

And he wants me to be his firstsale.

Jesus Christ, they’ve freaking lost it.

“How did you two even meet?” My brows furrow, because none of this is making sense. The exhaustion and lack of food and water is getting to me, and I can’t get my thoughts in order. It’s all too much, too confusing. Not to mention there’s probably lastingeffects from whatever drugs they gave me. My gut sinks as I think about the baby and the effect it could have on them, but I don’t show my concern outwardly since they’d only use it against me.

“We met the night I met your precious husband,” Lia says. “I left the club with Jer since you and Enzo were so wrapped up in each other… I’ve always thought you were a spoilt little bitch and that he deserved better. Turns out we get along well, and I actually treat him how he deserves, not like you have ever done.” She glares at me as if I wasn’t emotionally abused and neglected my entire life.

“I didn’t go home to visit my family, I just couldn’t fucking deal with your shit anymore, so we’ve been staying here together and planning our future,” she says wistfully.

I glare at them both. “You realize you’ve both just signed your death certificates, right? Enzo would kill anyone who hurt me, no matter who they are or were to me. Never mind the rest of his family. Did you really think it was a good idea to kidnap someone who just married into the most powerful family in the city? In the country?”

Lia rolls her eyes while my brother’s face blanches a little, as though he’s only now just realizing the implications he’s bringing down on himself before he slips back into an indifferent mask and sneers at me. “You’re really not that fucking special. Do you really think they’ll come for you? That you actually mean shit to them? And that’s even if there was a way for them to figure out where we’re keeping you since you no longer have that pretty little watch with a tracker inside.”

I nod along with him and school my features into what I hope looks like a contemplative expression while knowing full well that Enzo will have his whole family, Alec and whoever else he has at his disposal doing everything they can to find me.

My man might be a little insane, but he loves me with everything he has, and I have no doubts in my mind that he’ll do everything humanly possible to get me back. All I need to do is stall a little longer, so he has the time to find me. I need to stay strong for him.

“So do you have a buyer already lined up? As much as I’d like to stick around for this little family reunion and all, I’d really hate to keep them waiting,” I snark.

Jeremy smirks and strolls towards me. “We don’t have a buyer set up yet…” I let out a breath of relief before I could stop myself, only for his next words send a chill down my spine. “Because you’re going to auction.”

He crouches down beside me and unlocks the cuff on my wrist that’s keeping me chained to the wall and I don’t even think before I push him backwards. He falls on his back and I’m running on pure instinct when I pounce on him and use any strength I have left to fight him. I grip his hair and pull his head forwards before smashing it backwards as hard as I can, only I’m too weak to really hurt him, and he easily flips me over on to my back while Lia screeches in the corner.

The last thing I see before the world turns black is my brother’s fist coming towards my face.

Chapter Forty-Nine

Enzo

Turns out Lia Hansen is a conniving bitch. Seems her friendship with my girl started out as genuine, but at some point she met Robyn’s brother Jeremy, and things started to go downhill from there.
