John

John expected to die in that throne room. A few times, as a matter of fact. His mind definitely exploded at all the revelations.

But when it culminated in them surviving, only to be faced with a horde of suddenly leaderless minotaurs, he did what he did best.

Protected.

John spun a shield around Frieda and Dina. Forget Enyo and Bane, who arrived in time to fight. They went off to battle, gleeful in their bloody exuberance. Dina chose to stick within his shield, blasting with lightning, while Frieda, expression serious, severed any kind of future from those who got close.

It was savage. Chaotic. Deadly.

But when it was all said and done, his side was still standing.

He grabbed an exhausted Frieda and swung her around.

She laughed. “Careful, or I’ll puke.”

He set her on her feet and smiled at her. “We’re alive.”

“I never had a doubt,” she stated.

“What happened to not seeing your own future?”

“I didn’t, but I saw a future for Enyo and Dina, and another for you. Given you were in my bed at the time… Seemed kind of obvious I’d make it through.”

A more somber Dina said, “What about Mom?”

Frieda bit her lip before saying, “I don’t know where she is. Nor do I see her coming back.”

“That cow,” Dina huffed. “I’ll bet she doesn’t even try because then she’d have to explain herself. A fucking goddess? Seriously. And to think, she had us living like normal folk.”

“For a reason,” Frieda defended. “She wanted to stop Ariadne, and for that, she needed us. But had Ariadne known of our existence, she would have ended us. It explains why Mom never really let us get involved in the arcane world.”

“Think her story about our dad being human is true?” Enyo asked as she returned covered in gore but unharmed.

Frieda shrugged. “No idea.”

“What about Typhon?” John hated to ask, but the god hadn’t seemed happy to lose Ariadne and the chance to recover his power.

“He looked pissed,” Enyo pointed out.

“What’s he going to do about it? It’s not like he’s a god anymore. He’s barely even a wizard,” Dina retorted. “We took care of the problem. He’s free. Ariadne is gone. What he does next is up to him.”

“Where did she go?” John wondered if they truly were rid of her or if this was just a reprieve.

“I don’t know.” Dina made a moue of annoyance. “She conjured those portals but didn’t leave a trace.”

“Meaning she could still be here on Earth,” Enyo clarified.

Oddly enough, Frieda had the answer. “She’s gone from this plane of existence, and she won’t be back.”

“How can you be sure?” Dina eyed her sister.

“Because I see the future, remember, dummy?” Frieda teased. “And by the way, if you can figure out how to make a portal back to John’s house, his mom and Grams have a celebratory meal waiting for us.”

“Does it have cake? I need cake,” Dina muttered.
