I sit on the other side, surprised by how easy this feels even though we've barely spent any alone time together.
Mandy leans in and starts unpacking the tubs."I hope I got the right stuff.I'm glad you said you couldn't decide between spring rolls and wontons cause I love both and this way we can share.Though don't tell my cheer captain, she'd have a fit if she knew how much I'm planning on eating."
"Ah, so there is a cheerleader movie stereotype that's right," I joke.
Mandy snorts."In Zara's case, absolutely. She's strict, but it's just because she wants to win, it's her last chance before graduation. But she doesn't actually make us tell her exactly what we've eaten, thankfully. She's probably got better things to do with her time."
"That's reassuring."
"Mmm, the idea of a fanatic dragon-shifting cheerleader having the run of campus doesn't make you feel good?"
I laugh."Maybe not.Do a lot of the cheerleaders happen to have wings?"
"Only those of us who get on top of the pyramid," she responds, and something about the way she says it makes me think she isn't joking."What about you? What do you do on campus that isn't studying and giving romantic advice?"
"That I should never be giving in the first place," I mutter.
"Why?"
"Well, it's not like I have a huge amount of dating experience myself.I've only got the position because I'm a cupid."
"So maybe that counts for something."She reaches forward and picks up one of the spring rolls, dipping it in the sweet and sour sauce.
"Apparently."
"How do cupids work?If you don't mind me asking.I guess that's actually why Evie suggested I came to see you in the first place, but then I got completely distracted."
"You can ask.I'm not sure if it'll help with the succubus problem, though."I shuffle forward so I can help myself to some of the food.
She shrugs."Maybe not.But I'm kind of intrigued now regardless of if it helps or not."
"That's fair, it's always interesting to learn about other supernaturals."I eat one of the wontons and think about what to actually tell her."I guess, what do you know?"
"You're a supernatural, you have wings, and you feed off love," she says with a mischievous expression on her face."So basically what you knew about succubi."
"Mmm, I got that.Well all of that's true.Do you want to see?"
Her eyes light up."Your wings?"
I nod and get to my feet, knowing her answer just from the way she's responding.Though there's a part of me that's surprised I'm offering.I can count the number of people who have seen my wings on one hand.I know a lot of cupids like to show them off at any opportunity, but that's never really been me.
But it's more than just accepting showing her my wings.Iwanther to see them.
I make sure I've got enough room and call my wings to the surface. They spring out of my back, filling the room.Nerves fill me as I find myself wondering what Mandy is going to think.I want her to like them, even if she has no reason not to.
I stretch them out, enjoying the freedom."Oof, it's been too long."
"Tension in your back?"she asks.
I nod.
"Mind if I help?"
"Erm, sure?"
She wipes her hands and gets to her feet, stepping up behind me.I take a shaky breath while I try to work out what's going on.
Her hands land on my lower back, the touch surprisingly comfortable despite the fact it's not the norm for me to let anyone this close. She presses her fingers into the knots at the base of my wings, and I can feel some of the tension fading away.
