Anyway, I’m much happier now.

Do I detect a hint of jealousy?

Subject: I admit it

Iwasjealous. Past tense. Guilty as charged. Alexa made me a little jealous. But I also just didn’t believe her. I heard your interview on the radio, and she didn’t seem like a bad chick, but she was too enthusiastic, like she was exaggerating. Just too much, you know? I don’t think she was a fit for you.

So what’s a fit for me?

I don’t know, Rhys. I have no idea.

If I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t even see you in a serious relationship. But that must be because I’ve never heard of you being in one. I mean, it’s hard to imagine things you’ve never seen before, right? That’s all.

Subject: Good luck!

I just wanted to wish you good luck (or is it “break a leg” for musicians?) at the NYE party tonight. I hope it’s amazing, Rhys. Isuppose you’ve been busy between the trip and getting ready for everything. Hopefully next year is full of good things for you. For both of us. Another thing: thanks for my birthday present! It came yesterday, and it’s perfect! Pajamas with smiling spaghetti on them! I’ll never take them off. Plus they’re so warm…

Kate, Donna, and I clinked glasses. My sister had just finished her shift and had shown up pretty tipsy. She’d just broken up with Amanda and spent the whole night behind the bar taking one shot after the other and ignoring her boss’s looks, even though her boss was, honestly, really sweet and understanding. She was still letting Donna hang her pictures up on the walls of the bar, but lately Donna had hardly touched her paints.

“To us!” she shouted.

Kate’s eyebrows rose, and she started laughing. “Didn’t we already say a toast to us?”

“Who cares? To us! Again!”

“And to the office furniture!” Kate added.

“And to the plant in the kitchen that died yesterday!”
