“What’s the betting they all do,” I mused.
“Probably, considering how much trouble finds us. The clubhouse can also be secured,” Chey mentioned.
“Guess they take security seriously after what happened at their old clubhouse,” I muttered, tense. Quickly, I moved to the door and bolted it. That made me feel better.
We sat down and waited, talking quietly. It was five minutes before we heard Fanatic shouting our names.
Thalia went to open the door, and I stopped her. “Don’t, we don’t know if someone is making Fanatic call us. Just wait a few moments.”
Thalia looked at me wide-eyed but nodded.
“We’re here and locked in, Fanatic,” I shouted.
“Stay locked down, Kenny. We’ve found tracks in the woods,” Fanatic replied. “We’re securing the house.”
“Okay,” I called back.
My heart was thudding in my chest. Rooster sent another text telling me he was on his way.
“Kenny, you can come out. The house is secure now,” Fanatic called. “But Bear and some others are chasing somebody in the trees.”
Cautiously, I unlocked the door and peered out and saw Fanatic’s grim face. “You’re fine, Kenny.”
“Someone was watching us,” Thalia said, sauntering out. Chey followed, and after locking the safe room back up, I exited the study.
“Stay in the living room and away from windows,” Slaughter grunted.
“Do we know who it is?” I asked.
“No.”
“Could it be paparazzi? We’ve had trouble with them before,” Chey said with a sigh.
Oh, I bet Chey had. Being the lead singer of a popular band,The Wild Wind, Chey was more than used to her privacy being invaded.
“Possibly. Wouldn’t be the first time they’ve tried to breach our defences and got chased for it,” Wraith agreed.
But I could tell Wraith didn’t believe that. “You’re lying. Nobody knew the walls had been breached. You first realised when we called.”
Wraith scowled and muttered under his breath. With a smirk, I offered a sweet smile in return, and Wraith turned to watch out of the windows.
Long minutes ticked by with us all sitting tensely, and then we heard bikes coming up the road towards the houses. Bear swung off with Sunny and Big Al behind him.
“Chatter is checking the cameras for a clear shot, but the asshole was a ghost,” Bear announced, entering the living room.
Before I could move, Thalia was up and getting them all a cold drink from Rooster’s fridge.
“It was a man?” I asked.
“Not sure. I thought I caught sight of a small figure, about five foot five or six. And he was shaped like a man. Fucker moved fast and has a grey Toyota waiting, but the plates were smeared, and he was gone before we reached him,” Sunny said, frowning.
“An older man?” Fanatic inquired.
“Again, couldn’t tell you. Fuck, it could even have been a butch woman. It was a glimpse, nothing else. The asshole was aware of where the cameras were and avoided our traps,” Sunny continued.
“That doesn’t bode well,” Big Al grumbled.
“He either had the luck of the devil or knew where shit was,” Sunny agreed.
