Page 20 of Pucked Together

I'm getting into my car when I hear Keelan's sister say, "Get the hell out of my way, Trevor."

I open the door and look around to see a guy standing in front of her car door wearing a Heatwave jersey.

He has his hands up in front of himself, trying to calm her down.

"Please, Izzy. I promise you, I have the right intentions here."

"Oh, please. Just like you had the right intentions when you decided to bang my roommate on our anniversary. You're a fucking joke, Trevor. Move."

He puts his hands on both of her shoulders, and she jumps back, shaking him off. "That’s not what happened. And if you’d just listen to me, you’d know. Would you please just listen to me?"

"Hey!" The second the word leaves my lips, they both jolt. Izzy looks at me wildly, like she'd rather be anywhere else right now.

"She said move." Now I'm standing next to Izzy, staring down at him. Sincaid. Trevor fucking Sincaid is Izzy's ex?

He's the team's most recently drafted rookie. How would Izzy not know that?

The guy sizes me up and then looks back at Izzy.

"I see now. You want nothing to do with me because you've moved on. Wow. Really didn't take you long, did it?"

He dares sneer at her. I barely know him, and I can't stand him already.

"What the fuck is going on here, Sincaid?" I ask, bringing his attention back to me.

"Are you kidding me? How long have you been here?" Izzy demands.

I look over at Izzy, who looks like she's about to combust.

"I believe my girlfriend asked you a question,” I say in a threatening tone.

Now, both of them glare at me.

I put my arm around Izzy's shoulder and my other hand in my pocket, ignoring Izzy's laser stare and looking right at Trevor with my head tilted.

He looks at her, then back at me, then turns, shaking his head and muttering something as he gets into a blue pickup truck that seems too big for him and peels out of the garage.

"What the hell are you doing?" Izzy shifts her shoulders out of my hold.

"Trying to help you."

"Why?"

"I-I don't know."

She rubs a hand down her face.

"That's right. You don't know. You don't know anything about me. I just got the best news of my life. I don't need you or fucking Trevor or anyone else messing this up for me."

"Um, okay." I put both hands in my pockets, wondering why I'm not hearing a ‘Thank you for saving my ass in front of my cheating ex, Ryker' instead of getting a talking to like I'm a child.

"Now he's gonna tell everyone we're dating. I can't risk this job, Ryker."

"So tell him the truth."

"What? Are you kidding me? No, that's worse."

"Izzy," I sigh. "What do you want from me?"
