Page 99 of Papers Don't Lie
“Yes, anything," I agree.
“Kai,” Tristan, the businessman, warns me but I ignore him.
Raven looks around, biting her bottom lip. “I’m sorry I’m taking advantage of you when you’re in a situation like this, but—”
“Raven, please. I don’t have time to lose. Tell me what you want, and it’s yours.”
She nods, biting her lip. “I’ll tell you where she is if you can get divorce papers already signed for Jamie and me. He won’t cause you problems like Carter did, but he won’t let me leave unless I do something.” Her eyebrows fall low on her eyes, and her teeth bite at the inside of her cheek as she waits for my reply.
I don’t even think. “Done, and you’ll move here until that happens to make sure he doesn’t hurt you."
Her eyes instantly glisten, and her lips quiver. She places a hand on her face and her stomach. “Thank you," she murmurs, and I realize something when she looks at me.
A smile finds its way on my face. “You would’ve told me even if I didn’t agree to help you,” I state, and she simply agrees with an incline of her head.
“She’s in England. Windsor.”
As soon as the words are out of her mouth, I instantly sink into the chair, breathing in relief. It’s over. I know where she is, and if she wants me to, I can get her back home. Our home.
I get up, forcing Raven to follow me and hugging her to my chest. “Thank you," I whisper. “Did she go to him because she wanted to?” I ask when we break apart even though I’m afraid to hear the answer.
She shakes her head, smiling. “No."
I nod, relief blooming inside me, and I turn to Ryker. “Look out for her while we are gone?”
He simply nods, giving me a bored look. If something like this doesn’t incite this guy, I don’t know what will.
“Tristan, Kiaran, we’re going to England,” I tell them, and they nod, grabbing everything they put on the table, ready to leave. “Thank you again. We’ll get her back safely,” I say, walking away.
“Kai?” She stops me, and I turn to look at her. “She loves you, you know?”
I smile. “I do.”
“Do you?” She lifts a brow, hugging her chest.
There’s no reason for me to hesitate with the answer. “Why do you think I’m doing all of this?”
She laughs, and I say goodbye one more time before we rush out of the door, ready to have my wife back.
“Did you do what I asked you to do?” I elbow Tristan when we walk out of the house.
“Yeah, it’s done.”
FIFTY-FOUR
ESMERAY
Instead of running away, I returned to my seat and imagined doing it. I was free, breathing without feeling like I had a rock in my throat, and I was withhim.
Even thinking about his name hurt. I was starting to think it was all in my imagination.
To get through the rest of the dinner, I pictured his handsome face in my mind, fooling myself that my reality was different than it was.
After we left the restaurant, Carter had to drag me everywhere in Windsor, not to mention I was wearing heels—which was not comfortable at all, but he insisted I look good in his presence—and when we got to his house, he locked himself in a room before demanding I sleep in his bed.
Getting into his sheets is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever done in my life. It feels like the fabric holds a ton of diseases, waiting to spread all over me and eat me alive. Even if the house is clean, my mind registers this as being the dirtiest place on earth.
The only thing that would make me feel better is going to the studio and working on another suit for Kai, thinking that one day, I’ll get to see him again. In my imagination, when thathappens, he’ll drag me into his arms, telling me how much he missed my blueberry smell. He’ll kiss me and kiss me and kiss me until he gets enough, whispering his feelings to me.
