“Um… thank you.I guess.”I turned to take in the rest of the room and my eyes went wide.

“There is a private bath through that door and you will find we have provided clothes for you in the closet.Mr.Haynes has quite a few upcoming events, and we wanted to make sure you were well prepared.”

I hated how she kept referring to the two of them as a ‘we’.

“He picked out clothes for me?”

“No.I did.With a stylist, of course.”

“But how did you know my size?”

Pamela’s eyes shifted away for a brief second before she answered, “Mr.Haynes has a specific size he likes his women, so I made a guess. If there is anything that doesn’t fit, or you don’t like something, please let me know and I will have it replaced.”

What the hell did she mean by a specific size? The creepy weirdness that kept popping up was intensified yet again.I needed some answers, or I was going to lose it.

“Pamela, what exactly do you know about ‘The Perfect Match’ and ‘Sold to the Highest Bidder’?”

“I’m not sure I’ve heard of either of those companies. Why do you ask?”

Either she was the best liar I had ever encountered or she really was clueless.Which only made things more strange. If she didn’t know about the auction, then how did she know I was coming? What had this Mr.Haynes told his staff about me, and why did they all just go along with it?

“Never mind.It’s nothing.”

“Go ahead and freshen up.I’ll have someone come for you when Mr.Haynes is free.”

I watched as Pamela, the personal assistant, made her way out of my room and back down the hallway in the direction we came.I had no idea what time it was, but I was exhausted, thirsty and hungry.I wanted nothing more than a pizza from Little Italy and my comfy bed to eat it in.Tears stung my eyes as I stood there and realized how far out of my league I really was. This world wasn’t for me, not even a little bit.

Icouldn’tkeepmyeyes off the monitors as Pamela walked Raven through the house.Everything at the auction went according to plan. There was one other bidder who backed off when he realized I was going to take her home, regardless of the price.Sitting in that room with the others made my skin crawl. Most of them I had either known or known of.The auction house was small but popular in the crowds I circulated.Hearing about them was what had sparked my plan to begin with.Up until then, I had no idea how I was going to convince Raven to marry me, and it had to be her.She was the only choice that made sense.

“Mr.Haynes?”

I looked up to find Pamela at the door of my office.I had gotten here only minutes before Michael and Raven arrived, and I needed some time to calm myself before seeing her.The last thing she needed was to see me struggling to control myself the very first time we met.Desperation was simmering at the surface as it usually did, but no one other than Raven could cure me of it.

“Yes, Pamela?”

“She’s in her room, as instructed.I told her we would send for her when you were ready.”

“Thank you.You can head out for tonight.”

She turned to leave, but then looked back.“Sir, can I ask a question?”

“Yes.”

“Does she know about your business?”

“No, and I plan to keep it that way until she is settled in.”

“I see.”

“I am serious, Pamela, the only thing Raven Wessex will know about my career is real estate.Nothing else is to be disclosed to her by any of the staff.Do you understand?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Spread the word now.I will terminate anyone who violates that without question.I will not investigate.I will not give them a chance to defend themselves. They will simply be unemployed.I don’t have time or patience for any mistakes when it comes to Raven.”
