“What? Who is it? Is it him? What’d he say?”

I show her the text.

Hudson

Hi. Thank you for today. I had a great time.

Me

Hi. Thank you. I had a great time, too.

Hudson

Can I call you tomorrow between calls?

Me

Of course.

Hudson

Great. Talk to you tomorrow. Good night.

Me

Good night. Be safe.

“Oh. My. Gosh. Kate, that’s so sweet!”

Nodding, “I know.” I can’t help but smile.

“How do you feel?” Grace asks.

I turn to her as I hold my phone to my chest. “I feel really happy. Really happy.”

“You deserve it, Kate. Of all people, you deserve it.”

CHAPTER 20

HUDSON

I worked at Hooplas last night, but I felt like I was on cloud nine. Kane kept teasing me about forgetting orders, but I didn’t care. All I could think about was Kate and her smile. Then Renee walked in. I dodged her and worked in the back on stocking the new liquor bottles and supplies that came in that day, much to Kane’s relief. I have no patience with Renee, especially after yesterday’s amazing date with Kate. The two women are night and day from each other. Kate is my sunshine.

“Dude, where’s your head at? You aren’t writing anything down.” Chance says to me as we’re supposed to be taking inventory of the rescue truck.

“Sorry. What did you say?” He’s right. My head is some place else still.

“We’re down one Lidocaine, two triangular bandages, two nasal cannulas, and one Narcan.” Chance repeats.

“Got it.” I scribble it on the tablet we use for inventory. It translates our chicken scratch handwriting into text and we’re all thankful for that technology. You’d think we all went to medical school, or something.

“What’s up with you? Kane’s out of it today, too. ‘Course he’s just dreaming of that boat he just bought. What’s your deal?”

I look over to the Bean and Bagel, but I can’t see inside because of the glare of the morning sunrise shining on the front windows. Kate’s shop faces east; the fire station faces west. “Met someone.”

“Ah, man. Good for you. What’s her name?” he asks as he packs up the mess he’s made on the stretcher when he was counting supplies.

“Kate. She owns the Bean and Bagel across the street.”
