“Damned progress reports,” hisses Zephon as he begins to fill out a document. “Fucking higher-ups can’t let me carry out my mission in peace.”

He’s here for a mission? A diplomatic one perhaps… So he hasn’t come just to torment me.

I realize at that moment that I could have hallucinated him smiling deviously at me the other night.Am I that fucked up that I’m losing my mind? Focus!

Just then, the doors open once more, and in enters a commanding figure who is most certainly not a xaphan. The others peer down their noses at him, despite the fact the man who just entered is taller than anyone in the room.

Is that a soz’garoth? What on Aerasak is a demon doing here?

“You’re late, General Gel’ged Senel,” sneers Zephon.

“I’m not late, you’re just early. Let’s get this over with.”

“Very well. How are things with the man you’ve assigned to this case?”

“He’s not happy about doing it, and quite frankly, neither am I.”

I can’t say it’s a surprise that a xaphan and a soz’garoth don’t get along, but the questions still press in my mind. What the fuck are they working together on? Who is this man that they’re speaking of?

“I’m not exactly thrilled at the prospect of having to work with demons, but you don’t see me complaining about it, do you? Besides, should you pull out then it wouldn’t be very good for our diplomatic relations now, would it?”

The demon general snarls and grunts before replying.

“Is your intel report ready for me?”

“Yes,” replies Zephon, producing a file and handing it to Gel’ged.

The demon opens the file, flicking through its many pages and running a finger along its words and images, none of which I can see from where I am.

“I’ll hand this off to my man tonight,” says Gel’ged. “So are we done here then?”

“Yes, now get out of this embassy,” growls Zephon.

Both parties make a swift exit, allowing me to re-enter the vents. Through them, I hear the footsteps of Zephon and his men venture deeper into the embassy, to a part I have no path to.

“Damn it…”

I realize I won’t be taking anyone’s life tonight, but there’s something else that could make up for it. I scurry back to the outside grounds, making my way around the fencing just in time to catch the demon general leaving the building.

He has something confidential in that folder, and I need to find out exactly what it is. Whatever it is, it’s important enough for the demons and xaphan to be working together.

Something’s going on, and Zephon seems to be a leading figure in all of this so I know he’ll hang around until the conclusion of this supposed mission.

I begin tailing Gel’ged, following him from a few meters away. I blend in with the bumbling masses of people walking the streets, the perfect hiding spot for whenever Gel’ged glances over his shoulder.

Eventually, he comes upon an apartment complex. I can tell just how fancy and well-equipped this place is just from the exterior alone, for the apartments seem to be at least three times as big as mine.

Following him inside, the building is clean and smells fresh. I stay far behind as I trail his steps up a set of stairs, coming to a few floors above ground level.

He turns into a long and spacious hallway. I wait for him to get at least halfway down before I move. Watching from afar, I keep my hand readied on my knife as he stops outside a door. I dive behind a massive potted plant as he looks behind him once more.

The door opens, and I hear the familiar voice that shocks me.

“Can’t say I’m glad to see you,” says Azron, stepping out into the hallway.

“You know I’d much rather be here under different circumstances. I have the files for your mission. Let me in so we can talk.”

“Fine.”
