He runs his fingers along the edge of the blade, its tip curving in a similar fashion to his crooked smile.

“Aiken…” I groan weakly.

“Don’t talk Isla, save your strength,” stutters Aiken, flashing a brief reassuring smile at me.

“He’s right,” says Calix, retreating to my side. He rests the tip of the blade on my chest. “You should listen to him, you and I are only getting started.”

He directs his glare towards his brother.

“Once I’m done with my younger sibling here, then I will return to you and have some more fun.”

“You won’t do shit!” shouts Aiken, his suddenness startling both Calix and I.

“Watch me,” growls Calix. He runs the dagger along my skin, etching a new laceration on my chest. I wince as blood trickles out the wound.

“Release her at once!” demands Aiken. He’s shaking, though I can’t tell if it’s from fear of me being hurt or anger at his brother.

“On what grounds?”

“Because it is the right thing to do!”

“Pft, the right thing you say… So you’ve become one of those human sympathizers eh? What’s next? Are you going to protest in the streets for their equal rights?”

“And so what if I do that?” growls Aiken.

“So what?” snaps Calix. “Humans are a waste of space, time, and resources! Can’t you see? Ever since Isla came to the house, you’ve been less productive! Stuff like this is the only thing that they are good for.”

“No, they are living beings with a heart, just like us!”

Calix scoffs and rolls his eyes.

“They’re not good for anything except getting me off,” he chuckles. “They’ve got nothing, they’re weak, they have no magic, they-”

“Humans are special in their own ways, the color of their skin and what they’re capable of makes them unique to Protheka!”

“I wish you would just shut up and leave,” snaps Calix. “But this isn’t anything new for you.”

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

“You’re always in the way. That’s why we’ve never gotten along.”

“No, we were never friends because you’re a fucking asshole!”

“Ha! I really want to entertain that, but here’s the thing… Mother and Father would agree with me too.”

“I… I…”

“You know it’s true, don’t you? Tell you what, save your breath, turn around and hop back on whatever equu you rode here and we’ll forget that this ever happened.”

Aiken unleashes a feast on the walk beside him, leaving a hole through which a ray of sun beams through.

“You motherfucker! How dare you bring our parents up?” he yells.

“Because you and I both know I’m the favorite,” replies Calix with a cocky smile.

“All my life, I’ve had to put up with being forgotten about while you got all the praise, well no more!”

“And just what are you going to do about it, eh?” laughs Calix.
