“Most of the time,” remarks Calix as he looks my way.
I turn away, wishing that I knew an invisibility spell as I speed up my eating.
“Have you had your way with her?”
“Not yet but the time is coming.”
I better get the fuck out of here.
I quickly wash my plate and utensils before making a swift exit out of there. Behind
me, the muffled talking continues, its echoes stalking me through the hallways as I head toward the bathroom.
Thankful that the day is over, I let out a sigh of exhaustion. Turning the faucet on, I wash away the mixture of sweat and anxiety accumulated during the day.
It’s a shame that Aiken was too busy with work. He could have made the day a little better.
The tiredness from the day truly hits me as I dry off. A hunger for a good night’s rest sprouts within me as I leave for my bedroom. There, I throw off my clothes and change into a comfortable set of loungewear.
It’s a set of pink lingerie that sits comfortably on the skin. There was no way I was going to wear it as it was when I first found it resting on my bed, clearly left by Calix. Lorien had kindly given some extra fabric, thread, and a few needles to help me modify the clothing so that it would cover up more of my skin.
I open my window every so slightly to allow for ventilation on this hot summer’s evening. Yawning, I finally resign to my bed where I whip back its covers.
That’s when the bedroom door suddenly swings open. I turn to it in the hopes of seeing Aiken but to my horror, it’s Calix.
He drunkenly stumbles in with a smile on his face, the kind that one makes when they have their prey cornered. I physically feel my stomach form into a knot at the sight of him.
“C- Calix?” I stutter. “What are you doing here? I thought you were hanging out with your friends?” I ask, feigning a smile.
“They have gone home,” he says, shrugging his shoulders. “Alas, the night is still
young and I’m in the mood for a bit of fun.”
“I’m tired,” I say, my throat closing up as he takes a step towards me.
“Come on baby, don’t be like that,” he chuckles with that crooked smile fitting his mien.
“I don’t want to,” I reply, this time more confident in my tone. “I had too much work to do today and I need some rest.”
“All the more reason to unwind then,” he whispers. He speaks as though he’s trying to be seductive but all it does is make him more slimy than he already is. He draws nearer as his hands gravitate towards his zipper.
No, this isn’t happening!
My hands grip the bedside lamp behind me. Without thinking, I hurl it in his direction. His eyes widen at the last second, awakening in him the sense to dodge it.
The lamp hits the wall behind him with a loud bang, falling to the floor when it shatters to pieces. He looks at it for a brief moment before his gaze snaps to me.
Unexpectedly, he shoots out his hand, slapping across the face. The force of it throws me against the wall as I yelp out in pain. I look up in fear at him, afraid of what he’ll do as he points an accusatory finger at me.
“You stupid little bitch,” he hisses. “You’ll learn your place, I’ll make sure of it!”
He spins around on his heels and marches out the door, cursing me as he does so.
“You ought to remember just who you work for!”
The door slams behind him, but even in his absence, I feel the dread building within me. From out of nowhere, I get the feeling of being boxed in, as if my room is a coffin being lowered six feet under. My rate of breathing quickly escalates to the point of hyperventilation.
There’s no hope for me if I stay here. I won’t be able to hold off Calix’s advances much longer. Things are growing more dangerous and unpredictable by the day.
