Page 45 of Protect Me
A knock on the door has me trailing off. Bracken pulls it open to reveal Killian, D, Duncan, and a man I don’t recognize. His sandy brown hair falls in loose waves to his shoulders, and when his gaze lands on me, he smiles a cocky, sideways grin. “You must be Helen.”
I swallow hard. He’s handsome, and even without using my abilities, I can sense that what he desires most is vengeance. Against who or what, I don’t know. But a thirst for blood rarely ends well. “And you are?” I ask.
“Your White Knight.” He bows. “Also known as Isaac.”
“Shut the fuck up and get this over with,” Duncan snaps.
“Threatened?” he asks.
“Hardly. We just have shit to do.”
Isaac chuckles and moves into the room. I take a step back. “What exactly are we getting over with?” I demand.
“We’re going to hide you.” Killian crosses his arms. “So that what happened yesterday doesn’t happen again.”
“The men looking for me.”
“Precisely,” Isaac replies. “Let me do this, and I’ll make sure no one ever finds you again.”
For the first time since I laid eyes on him, fear twists into hope. “Will it work even when I leave here?”
“For as long as we both shall live,” he replies with a wink.
“What do you need from me?”
“Your hand and a drop of blood.”
I hold it out without further hesitation. “Do it.”
Isaac closes the distance between us and takes my hand then reaches into his pocket and withdraws something. One click of a button reveals a blade. My heart pounds as he presses the tip to my palm. A tinge of pain is followed by drops of crimson welling up onto the surface. He smears it with the knife then locks his gaze with mine as he licks it from the blade.
A low growl fills the room, and my gaze lifts to find Duncan watching, his teeth bared. I swallow hard and consider flashing a smile. But somehow, I think that would only make things worse.
Magic prickles along my skin as Isaac closes his eyes. Seconds pass in complete silence until he releases me and tucks his blade back into his pocket. “All done.”
“That’s it?” Duncan snaps.
“It may not look like much,” Isaac replies, “But I assure you it worked.”
“Thank you,” I tell him, feeling lighter than I have since I first arrived. This means freedom. It means being able to leave and not be tracked.
“Anytime.” He steps back from me and turns to D. “I’ll be sure to ring when I need that favor, big guy.”
“I’m sure you will,” he replies. “Now get the fuck off my property.”
Isaac chuckles and leaves the room, D, Duncan, and Killian all following. As soon as the door shuts behind them, I let out a breath. “What favor?”
“Don’t worry about it,” Bracken says. “And now I better get going. As soon as Isaac leaves, we have a security brief, and Duncan will have my balls if I’m late.”
He nods at Liv and closes the distance between us so he can drop a kiss on my forehead. “See you soon, gorgeous.”
He’s gonebefore I can figure out how to make my mouth work.
Liv watches me with an amused glint in her eye. “You okay?”
“All good,” I force out.
“Hungry?” she asks.
