Mine. Wow!

Because the rock was huge. Bigger than the candy rings I bought when I was a silly kid fantasizing about my dream prince. Bigger even than Dorinda’s ring, the mean girl from high school so long ago. And now here I was about to have a massive rock because Evan was my fiancé.

The man of my dreams.

Prince Charming come to life.

A billionaire alpha who had the world at his fingertips.

But then reality intruded.

Whimper. Aarf, aarf!

The sound of little puppy cries dragged my attention to where it belonged.

“I’m sorry, babies,” came my apologetic murmur. “Didn’t mean to ignore you. Just got lost in my thoughts.”

A litter of chocolate labs, soft and wriggly, whimpered and crawled on the blanket while I finished cleaning their cage.

“It’s okay, you guys. You can go back in now,” were my soothing words.

Making kissing noises at their tiny puppy faces, I helped them back into their cage and finished up checking off what I’d done on the chart nearby.

I was late doing this for the day. Normally, it wouldn’t take me this long, but inside was a confused turmoil. All because of Evan. He was everywhere. In my thoughts. In my dreams at night. I couldn’t get rid of him.

But I had to.

Because a man like Evan doesn’t belong with somebody like me. He’s rich, powerful, and handsome. The man literally grew up in a mansion. Meanwhile, I was a minimum wage slave at a pet store in scummy clothes and a dirty apron.

Soon, this fairy tale would be over and I’d have nothing. Did Cinderella feel like a fraud with time growling at her heels? But it was the truth. Soon, the clock was going to hit twelve and all I’d have was a pumpkin and a twenty thousand dollar check.

Well, at least the pumpkin was an engagement ring worth two hundred thousand dollars.

I slumped against the wall, suddenly feeling miserable.

Because honestly, I don’t even care about the money anymore.

Twenty thousand, two hundred thousand.

None of it mattered.

Instead, my heart’s filled with Evan. I can’t get enough of the alpha. The way he takes what he wants. His commanding air in the jewelry store, the way he knows exactly how to finagle every situation.

But right. The money. The deal. The ring. It was just a farce.

Dejection twisted in my stomach, making me sick.

“Are you okay in there, Maggie?”

I jumped at the sound of Dr. Reynolds’ voice and almost fell over. “Yes, coming!”

You need to get your shit together, came the voice within. You have a job and animals to take care of. You might be living in a dream world with Evan now but once he’s gone, what next? Get with it.

Heart heavy, I picked up the chart for the next batch of incoming animals and began to work.

But it was hard to get the billionaire out of my mind. His face swam in front of me. Those piercing blue eyes. That mouth that latched on hotly to my clit and made me beg for mercy. The clever tongue, licking at my pussy and then my anus.

Oh god.
