"Do you want to be a Guardian?" Marcel asked.

"Not really. But there is nothing I'm passionate about, and the idea of having a job that I need to show up for every day doesn't appeal to me. I like to learn new things, and I like to take on interesting projects that are not too long. Otherwise, I get bored."

"Then Guardian training is not for you." Marcel finished folding the suit and put it in its crate.

When Sylvia pushed to her feet, Sofia followed her up. "I'll walk with you to the truck."

"Good luck," Mia said.

"Thank you." Sylvia bent to give Mia a hug. "Don't worry. With these suits, they are invincible."

"What about you? Are you going to wear one?"

Sylvia shook her head. "I'm staying in the van with William." She let go of Mia and stretched, then turned to Marcel. "You should stay in the van with us. It's the best seat in the house. We get to see the entire battle on the screen. The drones film everything on their path and transmit it to William's computer."

"Yeah." Sofia wrapped her arm around his middle. "You should stay in the van where it's safe, and let me know what's going on. You haven't been on active duty in centuries."

"I'll be fine. I train with the reserves."

Lifting his crate was no small effort. The suits weighed over two hundred pounds each, and they weren't the only thing in the crate. The rest of his weapons were there as well.

When they got to his designated truck, he climbed in, pushed the crate under the bench, and then got back down to say goodbye.

He pulled Sofia into his arms. "I'll ask Sylvia to give you updates."

"I prefer for you to do it. That way, I will know that you're safe."

"I am safe. These suits are not just for protection. They make me ten times stronger. I can take on a pureblood while wearing them and win."

She closed her eyes. "Things happen in battle, and I can't lose you. Promise me not to do anything stupid."

He arched a brow. "When did I ever give you the impression that I'm the reckless type?"

"Good point. Just be safe, and don't do anything overly heroic."

"I won't."

He kissed her, and as she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back, he got so lost in the sensation that he didn't hear Bhathian calling his name until the Guardian clapped him on the back.

"Time to go. Save your kisses for later."

JADE

"Enough." Valstar swiped both glasses off the table, sending them flying to the concrete floor and shattering on impact.

Jade lifted a brow. "Impatient?"

His eyes were fully red, in part because of lust and in part because of the combination of alcohol and drugs, but he wasn't nearly as weakened as she'd hoped for.

A trickle of apprehension slithered down her spine.

She hadn't fed earlier in order to leave room in her digestive system for the copious amounts of blood she was about to suck from him, and that meant she wasn't at her maximum strength either.

The hatred and rage would have to be fuel enough.

"Get rid of your clothes if you don't want them ruined." He tore his shirt off, sending the buttons flying. One hit her face, and the rest tumbled harmlessly to the floor, landing among the shards of broken glass.
