Page 59 of Little Mate

The vampires and wolves watch us, but it’s the two men almost nose to nose that seem to not get the memo.

“Theodore, please come here,” I say, voice low, but he ignores it with a shake of his head. Instead, he says something too low for anyone else to hear, and judging by Xadiel’s response, it’s offensive.

So much so that the latter half-shifts and snaps his teeth at my mate. Stupid move.

“Isa…?”

“Do it.”

Not waiting another second, and right as Theo’s hand wraps around Xadiel’s neck, I call upon their souls.

“Prohibere.” My love might think he doesn’t have one, but he does. He’s just as large, dominating, and imposing, but bends for me when called forth like all the others do. Werewolf and vampire; shock sets in as they stop. No movement or sound, and Isa rushes to her mate as I do mine. “Satus.”

“The fuck was that?” Xadiel asks, but my eyes are on Theo’s, hoping he isn’t mad at me. “Isa, did you do that?”

“No, but my sister did.”

“You are so amazing, pretty girl.” A whooshing breath escapes my chest at his response, a giggle bursting through. “And no, not mad. Although, the mutt does need to learn some manners.”

“Name the time and place.”

“For the love of!” Isa trails off, but the half-scream, half-groan she makes has her mate dropping the attitude. “I told you my sister was coming with her mate.”

“You never said he was a—”

“Quit the insults already. Both of you.” My tone leaves no room for argument, and Theo is the first to extend a hand and I’m proud of him. “Thank you, love.”

“Happy wife. Happy life.” The wink he sends my way causes me to flush, but it’s nothing compared to my sister's squeal a second before she engulfs me in a hug. It’s tight and she’s loud, but the tension drops a bit when she sees the ring.

How can it not when they all stare at it?

As if they know something I don’t.

“What?” I ask, my eyes ping-ponging back and forth. “What’s wrong?”

“He gave you the bloodstone of Thanatos.” God of death. Part of the underworld and my keeper. “The stories are true, then? How else would you have such power?” Xadiel isn’t accusing nor is there hostility—more like understanding.

“Theodore?” I’m shaky. Not understanding, and yet…

My father took a break and a human girl as his.

You can’t kill what’s never truly been alive.

You’ve been mine since your first breath.

“He is my father.”

“You’re a half?”

“I am.” His eyes go from amber to red, looking at every single person present. “Speak of this to anyone, even if it's your kin, and I will kill you and them. Only the most trusted vampires in my coven know this. Understood?”

“Yes.”

“Good.” Grabbing my hand, he lifts it to his lips and kisses the finger with the large engagement ring. “You have always been my destiny; I understand that now. I was wrong to ever think a mate was a curse when you are the reason I’m alive.”

What happened outside earlier today has been left alone for the time being, as if it never happened, and the focus quickly turned to my parents. Their spirits have been calling out to me all day, a bit nervous, but I put it down to our saying goodbye.

It’s as hard for them as it is for us. All three children will be in attendance, and there are strangers on their land, that for the time being, pledge loyalty to the Moore family.
