She takes a few steps forward and as she comes into the dim light of my room, I take in all of her, her eyes blood-red and swollen with fresh tears running down her face. She's biting her bottom lip so hard, she might draw blood, and her body is shaking just enough for me to notice.
"You're okay?"
"I will be once you come here."
She doesn't hesitate a second longer, and the moment she sits on the bed, I reach up and tangle my fingers in her hair and bring her lips down on mine. I swear, the Earth shifts. Everything that has been wrong and off since she broke up with me snaps back into place.
Just as our tongues find a rhythm together, she gently pulls away and rests her forehead on mine.
"I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry I pushed you away. I'm sorry I made you drive in the snow. I'm sorry for being such a bitch to you. I'm so sorry, Declan." Her voice breaks as she squeezes her eyes shut tight.
I shake my head and squeeze the back of her neck slightly. "Don't do that. You have nothing to be sorry for. Snow, rain, I don't care. An active volcano wouldn't have stopped me from trying to come to your house that night, baby."
She laughs and sits up enough to look me in the eyes. "I love you, Declan Harp. I've loved you since you came into my life and I don't ever want to picture a moment of my life without you."
Sincerity rings in every word and the determination and fierceness in her voice brings tears to my eyes.
I run my thumb over her cheek. "Lena, the jeans I was wearing the night of the accident, where are they?"
She reaches up and pulls my hand from her neck and sets it on the bed before getting up and going to a white bag on the other side of the room. Bringing the bag with her, she reaches in and pulls out a pair of seriously bloody jeans, laying them in my lap.
I toss them around until I find the right pocket and reach inside, sighing in relief as I pull her ring out. "Hold out your left hand." She does as I ask, a confused look on her face. Gently, I slid the promise ring back on her finger, bringing a smile to her face.
She grabs the bag and jeans and tosses them on the floor next to the bed.
"Guys," my dad says and we both look over at him. He points to the television just as the New Year’s Eve Ball hits the bottom, lighting up the year ‘2020’. "Happy New Year."
When Lena turns back to me, she leans down and kisses me with such softness, it takes my breath away. Pulling back and cupping either side of my face, she smiles. "I love you. And I will love you, fully and without reservation, for the rest of my life."
I pull her down and she snuggles into my side. For the first time this year, everything is absolutely perfect and I can't wait to see what our future holds. God knew what He was doing, and He doesn't leave anything to chance.
Now, I can't wait to see where His path takes us.
