“Physically, yes, but it was still there, able to be channeled. This time, it’s gone into hiding.”

“Hiding?”

“Magic is its own living thing, as you well know. If it senses a threat to its purpose, it will dissipate, allowing itself to be absorbed into something—or in this case, someone—so it can protect itself against being used for something other than what it’s intended for.”

“What the hell does that mean?”

“Who has the magic?”

Walker turns to Cole. “Your son.”

“My—what?”

Both Elijah and I gape at the psychic. “You’re telling us that all that magic from that line, the same line Delaney accessed to defeat Lucy, is inside her baby?”

Walker nods. “It’s hiding.”

“Wait a fucking minute.” Cole closes his eyes for a moment and holds up a hand. When he opens them again, his pupils are fully dilated.

I move closer in case his stress forces him into a shift and he tries to eat the messenger.

“When the fuck could it have gotten in there?” He looks horrified, and rightfully so. After all, that magic nearly got Delaney killed. It brought me back to life. There’s no telling what it’s capable of.

“My guess is last night while she was there. But you don’t need to worry; the magic is not going to harm your son.”

“See, you keep saying son, but we don’t know what it is yet.”

“I do.” Walker leans forward and clasps a hand on Cole’s shaking shoulder. “You’re going to have a son, Cole. And he’s going to be good. Powerful. The future for all of us.”

The shifter shuts his eyes tightly, and a tear slips down his cheek as his body relaxes. “A son.”

“Yes.”

“Who is currently in possession of ley line magic.”

“Yes.”

“Why him? Why did it choose him?”

“Because he’s pure, Cole. Pure, good, and it chose him and your mate to protect it until this fight is over. I’ve Seen it. The clearest vision I’ve ever gotten, and I know this without a doubt.”

“Congratulations.” We all turn to Willa, who’s standing in the doorway, her dark hair pulled up high on top of her head. She smiles softly at Cole. “You deserve nothing but happiness, Cole.”

Although she smiles, I note the hollow pain behind her dark eyes, the circles beneath them, and the defeat in her shoulders.

“Willa,” Walker whispers. We all turn to him as the female alpha tilts her head to the side.

“Are you okay?”

The psychic’s face pales, his pulse steadily increasing, though it’s not lust I’m picking up, more of a shocked kind of curiosity.

He clears his throat. “Fine. You just surprised me.” Walker takes a deep breath. “I need some meds. I just wanted to make sure you knew.” Awkwardly, he turns and all but sprints away. Honestly, if his body weren’t still injured, he likely would have.

“Thanks.” Cole’s words are hollow as he stares blankly ahead.

“You guys have fun last night?” Elijah asks, changing the subject for the benefit of the shifter.

“We did. A lot more than I thought we would. Is there coffee?”
