Chapter Nine

Cason went into his office and called his partner first.

“Yeah.”

Cason rolled his eyes. “Why can’t you answer the phone like a normal person?”

Devon chuckled. “Fuck off. Now, what do you want?”

“We’ve got a situation here in the building.”

“Oh, hell, what happened?”

“I’ll tell you all of it when you get here, but I’ll give you the particulars now. A woman was hiding in our building.”

“Jesus. For how long?”

“Four days.”

“Why?”

“I’ll give you the short story. Her mother wants to give her to a foreigner. She thinks some of it has to do with money but also thinks her mother owes this guy. Lacey, that’s the woman’s name, met the man a few times and called him a monster. He called her his good luck charm.”

“That’s strange.”

“What scares me is I think he might be mentally unstable.”

“Oh, fuck.”

“Yeah. The maid overheard them saying weird shit.”

“How old is she?”

“Twenty-three.”

“Hell, she’s an adult.”

“Yes, but that’s part of the long story. Guess who her mother is.”

“Oh, fuck, I know I’m not going to like it.”

“Judge Lilith Holloway.”

“Are you fucking kidding me? Shit, man, this could get ugly.”

“I know. I didn’t tell the others yet, but I’m planning on it after I talk to you.”

“Others?”

“Part of the long story. When can you get here?”

“It will take me a few days to finish this contract, and then I’ll head right home.”

“Good. The sooner, the better.”

“Gather all the information we have on that judge. God, I would love to be able to put that bitch away for the rest of her life.”

“Me, too. I don’t want us to talk about it in front of Lacey.”

“You got it. I’ll get back to work.”

“See ya.”

Cason called Eli, Kane, and Caleb on a conference call.

“Do you guys have a minute?” He waited for their answers and then went into what Lacey had told him and the investigation against her mother.

“Holy shit, this could get bad,” Caleb said.

“Yeah, it could. I think maybe you guys should think about staying away from this for now.”

Caleb grunted. “Good luck with that, bonehead.”
