âOh dear,â Tricia said.
âThen she had another seizure.â
âYes, I was shaking and drooling and they had to tie me down!â Kat laughed.
âMum?â Cameron said.
âSheâs right, Iâm afraid. Itâs was awful.â She looked to Kat. âGoodness, Kat, itâs not funny!â
âSorry, Mum, but it is. I wish I could have seen myself.â
Cam smiled at his impish little sister. âKitty-Kat, you will be the death of all of us, do you know that?â
âTell them the rest, Mum,â Kat said.
âDr. Blake said it was the worst seizure he had ever seen. They had to give her several different injections before she came out of it. And the doctor saidââMrs. Price wiped her eyesââhad we not been here, in the hospital, Kat would surely have died.â
Tricia gasped.
Kat continued laughing. âYes, I almost died, Cam!â
âThatâs not the least bit funny, Kat,â Cameron admonished. âThank goodness you brought her here, Mum.â
âYes, Iâve thanked God constantly. But Cam, the bill has gone so high. Itâs over one hundred fifty pounds already because of all the medication and the special doctors who have been in to look at Kat, and Dr. Blake said that she needs to stay for a few more days to be observed.â
âDonât worry about the bill, Mum. I can take care of it. But why does she need to stay? Isnât she better?â
âYes. The fever has broken, and obviously sheâs responsive now. But since they donât know exactly what caused her illness in the first place, they want to make sure she doesnât relapse. Evidently there are conditions that can recur, especially conditions that involve seizures.â
âOh.â Cameronâs heart lurched. âWell, then youâll stay of course. How many more days?â
âThree or four.â
âThatâs no problem. We only want the best for our Kitty-Kat.â Cameron sat down on the bed next to his little sister, gathered her in his arms, and kissed her cheek. âTrish and I sure have missed you.â
; âIâve missed you too, Cam. Iâm so glad you came. Iâd like to have more visitors. Could you bring Lady Lily and Lady Rose to visit me?â
Cameron jolted at Roseâs name. âKat, Lady Lily is the duchess now. Sheâs on her wedding trip. Youâll be home by the time she returns to the estate.â
âWhat about Lady Rose?â
Mrs. Price cleared her throat. âCameronâ¦â
âMum, Kat, Iâm going to go downstairs to the office and take care of the bill. Stay here, Tricia. I wonât be long.â
âBut, Camâ¦â Kat said.
âIâll be back in an instant, Kitty-Kat.â
âBut when will you bring Lady Rose?â
âHush, Kat,â Mrs. Price said. âLady Rose is a busy lady of the peerage. She doesnât have time to visit you.â
âShe will if Cameron asks her to.â
âIâll be back.â Cam walked out the door before he could hear any more of this dreaded conversation. He went down to the first floor and asked for guidance to the bookkeeping office. He entered and found a young man sitting behind a mahogany desk stacked with papers. Cameron cleared his throat.
