“I know, Tash.” His lips brush against mine again. “I know.”

A sliver of awareness passes through us, and there’s no more denying the bond between us. The way everything inside me, down to my soul, seems to angle toward him.

He’s my equal.

My heart.

My… mate?

Yes, that’s it exactly. Even draped in darkness the way we are, we found the light in each other. I refuse to back down from the truth for anything in this world. As long as I still have breath in my lungs and blood in my veins, I’ll fight for us.

It’s impossible to think that not too long ago, I thought of us as mortal enemies. Now I know it was my fear interfering with what my heart truly wanted.

“Oh, my. Isn’t this a scene?” A new male’s voice injects into our soft moment, stealing our attention. “Not what I expected to come home to at all.”

There’s a collective gasp throughout the hall, and when Reid and I break apart, we stare into the face of an older man with hair dark but peppered with silver and hard lines wrinkling his forehead and mouth. Even though his stance appears calm and a bit revolted, there’s darkness in his gaze as he takes us and the other wolves in.

A flash of recognition shoots through me, followed by the deep clenching of dread in the pits of my stomach. It’s been so long since I’ve seen this monster’s face.

On the day my sister was sacrificed.

Edmund.

Problem is… he’s supposed to be dead.
