“Wolf Hunter,” another one snickers beside her. “More like WolfLover.”
I narrow my eyes on her. “Really? Are you proud of that one?” Then I raise my voice among the din of too many people speaking at once. “They might have their issues—everyone does—but you’re no better. You can parade around acting like you’ve got a reason to kill, but it doesn’t make your souls white. It makes them black.”
Mae spins on me with her finger outstretched and pointed right at my heart. Maybe she’s just gonna curse me and get it over with. Better than burning. “You failed your people, Miss Ward. It is a grave offense, and one we do not take lightly. You chose to side with the Redcliff Pack instead of the coven.”
“I’m on no one’s side but my own. What don’t you get about that? I only wanted to find my sister.”
“Then may you reunite on the other side of the veil. I’m sure she’s waiting for you there. After everything that must’ve happened to her, death was a blessing.”
She sounds absolutely certain of it. And that means she knows something, something she isn’t telling me.
“What do you know?” I jerk forward until the ropes bite through my skin again. “What do you know about Carmen?”
Mae’s eyes finally meet mine, and in her frigid gaze, I can’t help but wonder ifshe’s the one responsible for Reid’s mother’s death or my sister’s disappearance. But before I can dwell too long, her hand whips out to slap me across the cheek. Blood coats my tongue instantly.
“Dawn, Miss Ward,” she snaps. “Say your prayers. There’ll be no way out of this one.”
