What the—

One sharp breath and he’s right in front of me with that same vicious smile that used to make me want to scream.

He leans in so close I can feel his breath on my skin. “God, you smell so good when you’re scared, my pretty little fucking thief …” he whispers into my ear. “Run.”

CHAPTER 63

Ivy

I don’t wait evenone second before I bolt out the door.

I glance over my shoulder as Silas and Heath casually grab the red purge masks lying on the cabinet beside the mirror, the same masks they had on when they first chased me into the woods, and the elation that ripples through me is riveting.

Heath throws Max a mask too. “Your turn to fucking hunt her down with us.”

A smile forms on my face before I bolt through the hallways. “Can’t catch me!”

“Watch us.” Heath’s warning as he puts on the mask, leaving an eerie glow near Silas’s door, gives me the chills.

Goddammit, I missed this.

It’s messed up and insane, but the moment they run after me down the stairs is when I come alive.

God, I am just as demented as they are, but I don’t care anymore.

I need this.

I need it as much as they do.

I run down the stairs as fast as I can, leaving blood drops everywhere as breadcrumbs. I bolt out the door and across campus, all the way to Prior Forest way beyond. The trees loom over me, blocking out part of the sun, with the occasional chirping of birds to break the silence.

Until a cold, unhinged laughter fills that void.

And my pussy actually throbs at the sound.

“Didn’t you hear? There’s nowhere you can hide from me, little thief. I will always fucking find you.”

I stop and clutch a tree, smearing my blood all over the trunk.

“That pussy ismine.”

His voice only makes me run harder and faster until my legs start hurting and my lungs become deprived of oxygen. Even then, I keep running, not because of my fear but in spite of it. After all, no one could ever harm a girl with monsters chasing her into the abyss.

Freedom has never tasted so bittersweet because even though I am free of my burden, my past, and my debt, this heart has been torn asunder by these boys … but I wouldn’t dream of stitching it back together. All the dark fragments of my soul belong to them, and I just know they’d guard every fucking piece with their lives.

I keep running through the forest until I reach the same rocky alcove where I first hid from them, and I come to a stop to take abreath. Around me, birds flutter through the trees, and I turn to see where the sounds are coming from.

More laughter emanates from the forests behind me, so I swiftly turn on my heels, ready to bolt.

A set of bright eyes flicker in the dark.

“What are you going to do now?” Heath’s dark voice breaks my calm.

I shiver, still taking ragged breaths, while three devils in red LED masks approach steadily from each corner of the forest. But the thrill of the chase hasn’t created the fear I’d expected it would … instead, all I feel is tempestuous excitement.

“Nowhere to run, little thief,” Silas says as he steps out half-naked from between several high trees beyond, the scars on his chest clearly visible in the moonlight.

“Except right into our arms,” Heath adds, walking out from the left while tucking his hair into a bun as if preparing to sprint.
