“Nothing. I’m just grumpy,” I muttered. “This sucks.”

“I know, Red.”

I smiled at the nickname, but then realized he called his teammate Red. Wasn’t that a little weird? “Maybe you shouldn’t call me that.”

“Why?” he chuckled.

“Because…I would hate for you to think of your teammate while you’re screwing me. It might…make things weird.”

I heard a choking sound that almost sounded like gagging. “Thanks, Isla. That…puts so many disturbing images in my head.”

“Sorry.” I sighed heavily. “Maybe we shouldn’t do this tonight.”

“What’s wrong?” The heightened tone in his voice made me feel bad, but I just wasn’t into this tonight.

“I just…this is hard and…I miss you.”

“I miss you too. I swear, this will be over soon.”

“You keep saying that, but?—”

“No buts. I’m close to ending this.”

Tears pricked my eyes and I blinked them away, cursing myself for being a girl about this. I blew out a breath to regain control. “Tell me this is all worth it.”

“It is. Now, lay on the bed and let me help you relax.”

“I don’t think we should tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because…I’m not in the mood.”

“Then let me put you in the mood,” his voice rumbled.

“Kavanaugh—”

“Lay down on the bed,” he ordered.

I glanced at the bed, convinced this was not going to work. I wanted to argue further, but maybe he needed this. I could fake it. I could pretend I was getting off and he would never know. So, I followed his orders and laid down, putting the phone on speaker even though I had no intention of actually participating.

“Okay.”

“Take a deep breath and think of something calming.”

“You inside me would work right about now,” I grumbled.

He chuckled. “How about a happy place?”

“Again, you inside me right now?—”

“Someplace that doesn’t require me inside you.”

“Well, that narrows it down significantly.”

I wiggled on the bed, trying to get comfortable, but finding a happy place was harder than I expected.

“Are you there?”
