Lia has an aura about her that you can’t help but gravitate towards. In college, she wasthatgirl. The girl all the guys wanted, and all the girls wanted to be. A lot of people would let that go to their head, revel in the feeling of being different, set out from the rest and only befriend those like her. But not Lia, nope, she stuck to me like glue for some unknown reason. Even though we’re polar opposites, we complement each other perfectly.

Lia’s statement makes my thoughts go back to earlier this week, when a woman and her brother-in-law came into the store.

Enzo.

The guy who came into the bookstore, looking like he had just walked fresh off a catwalk or a photoshoot. He must have been around 6’3 with olive skin, thick brown hair that was a little shaggy, but in aI’ve just woke up and still look hot as hell kinda way, and deep brown eyes that I nearly got lost in quite a few times.

He was dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt, but he may as well have been wearing a full three-piece suit with the way he carried himself. I could tell from the first glance that he was someone important.

He could be anything from an important businessman to a professional athlete, especially with his broad shoulders and the way his t-shirt clung to him. That man definitely works out often.

I don’t think I’ve ever laid eyes on a more attractive man. There was something about him, something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

It felt like familiarity, even though I’d never met him before. It felt like we knew each other, like we were connected.

It’s weird, but I felt like I could lower my guard around him, like I could be myself and not have to worry about anything else while in his presence. I didn’t feel the need to become the quiet girl I usually do around people.

Even if it was only a brief interaction while he was buying some books for his sister-in-law, I feltseenby him. Then again, that could just be because of how intense his gaze was, how well he listened to what I was saying. It was as though everything disappeared and the only thing that he could see was me.

“Earth to Robyn.” Lia waves her hand in front of my face, pulling me from my spiraling thoughts and I blink a few times, finding her sat in front of me. She must have moved when I was zoned out.

“Sorry… I spaced out, what were you saying?”

“No shit, girl. I’ve been tryna get your attention for the last five minutes. Where the hell did you go?” she huffs before adjusting herself so she’s sitting crossed legged in front of me, her back leaning against the marble coffee table behind her.

My eyes flick up and I see that she even paused the tv while I was out of it.

“Just thinking about work,” I say.

It’s not technically a lie if I met him at work, right?

“This is my point! You’re always so focused on work. You need to get out more, meet more people, get some dick in your life.”

I roll my eyes at her dramatics. It’s not as though I never leave my apartment, most weeks we usually spend our Friday nights out having drinks or going out for dinner.

And yes, it’s been a while since I last had sex, but I have my trusty vibe, I don’t need a man to get me off.

“I’m happy with my life the way it is, L. I promise, the moment I feel the need to change things up, you’ll be the one I come to,” I murmur, and she rolls her eyes in response.

“Damn right, I will be.”

Lia goes back to her previous spot on the floor and presses play on the screen before pulling me into our usual debate about who is better,McDreamyorMcSteamy.

That’s how I spend the rest of my evening, laughing with my best friend while forcing myself to forget about the tall, dark and handsome man who wandered into my store. Except he didn’t just wander into the store, he also wandered into my head and hasn’t left since.

Chapter Four

Enzo

My shoulder burns as I pull the blood-stained hoodie over my head. I’ve just spent the last two hours watching as Luca and Izzy torture the fuck out of the asshole who rigged my car to explode before they finally handed him over to me and let me finish him off.

Luckily, Izzy and I came out of the explosion with only a few cuts and bruises. Izzy suffered from a concussion, and I ended up with a piece of metal in my shoulder, but other than that we escaped unscathed.

I’ve spent the last ten days splitting my time between watching Robyn to make sure she’s safe and spending time with Izzy. I felt guilty as fuck that she had gotten hurt while with me, and it took hours after she had woken up in the hospital for me to even let her out of my sight.

Luca has been even worse; he won’t let the poor woman out of his sight for longer than thirty minutes. I’m not sure if he’s realized he’s in love with her yet, or if he’s just fucking clueless.

After peeling my clothes from my body, I step into the shower and turn on the water, watching as the water runs pink as the blood washes away from my body.
