“It’s the going rate for a high-level hit,” Sal adds.
I frown. “How do you know that?”
He doesn’t answer, but rolls his eyes at me.
Okay. I guess I never really knew what Sal’s role in our family business was, but now I have significantly more questions than I did before.
“Okay. So. There was an attempted hit on Luna. Dino is the one who gave them information. He didn’t get pressed for it. He offered it. Did the gang say who paid them to do it?”
“No,” Gia said. “It was a market job. They just took it because they had the information from Dino, so it was low hanging fruit.”
“So,” I repeat slowly. “Someone wanted to put a hit on Luna. We don’t know who.”
“The Russians took credit for it. Because their precious princess was kidnapped by the Irish,” Elio adds softly.
That’s news to me. “What?”
“You were right, cara mia. When you told me to continue to look into things. The Russians were forced to take credit for a hit they didn’t do. By the Irish, who think the motorcycle gang has the guns that they paid for.”
I’m pretty impressed that Elio is including me in this. I would have preferred to know about it much earlier, but then again.
We’ve been somewhat occupied with other… thoughts.
Mostly pretending to be a happy, normal family.
“Whatever is going on, they’re doing a great job of hiding their tracks and playing off of old rivalries,” I muse.
Sal nods. “Yeah. They really are. They seem to know all the buttons to press when it comes to our families, and the dynamics between a couple of the businesses involved.”
“Who has knowledge like this?” I ask the room.
Gia tilts her head. “What do you mean?”
“What type of person, if any, makes it their business to know everything about everyone?”
Gia snorts. “We all do, babe.”
“No,” I stand. I’m pacing, my mind whirling. “We need to think of who has the most to lose, and most to gain.”
“To gain? Probably the motorcycle gang but they’re pretty much just thugs. Happy to be bodies for hire as long as they get their guns and their glory and get out,” Sal adds.
I look at him. “You said there was trouble at the warehouse. What was it?”
“Workers being harassed on the way to work. Break-ins.”
“Gia and I were shot at, prior to coming to collect Caterina,” Elio adds softly.
Sal looks at Gia. “That seems relevant.”
“I get shot at a lot,” she says, brushing off his irritation. “I didn’t think they would be connected at all.”
“No matter what, it seems like somehow we’re in the middle of this web,” I frown.
I glance back at Elio. “I know you think you have a lot of enemies.”
“Oh, he does,” Gia says eagerly.
I roll my eyes at her. “I think it’s time to get a little more specific about who they are, what their specific beef is, and what they want.”
