Her lips turned down. “I don’t know how to help you. Not yet, but John’s been trying to teach me how he blocks your magic from seeing everything around you. I haven’t mastered it yet, though. I’m having a hard time getting it to work for more than a few minutes. Which is annoying as hell. I mean, ask me to blow shit up, and bam, I’m your girl. But this whole shielding stuff…” She grimaced. “John’s the one who spelled this room so you could sleep in peace.” She waved a hand.

“He’s here?” A quick happy exclamation, followed by, “You still haven’t said where here is.”

“Just inside the Mexican border. We couldn’t wake you up after the incident with the old man, so Enyo grabbed our shit from the hotel, and once we could be sure we didn’t have a tail, we started driving.”

“Why would we be tailed?” I stupidly asked before remembering what Carillo claimed. “Someone told him where to find me. Told him what I was.”

She nodded. “We can’t figure out who, though. When we fled the island, Bane only contacted a few people to tell them we were okay. One of them must have betrayed us.”

“Can’t entirely blame them. If it was one of the islanders, they lost their home and most likely did it for money.” The island had been shaking when we left, prompting a mass evacuation.

“Don’t you fucking make excuses for assholes,” Dina hotly retorted.

“What’s the plan now? We driving over the border? Might be a bit hard without a passport. Guess that rules out flying too.” I chewed my lip in thought.

“Crossing won’t be an issue. It’s where we go next that needs to be decided.”

“Home, duh.” I rolled my eyes.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

“It’s got my panic room.” Made of some material that didn’t transmit visions. “And my couch doesn’t usually give me any problems.”

“You’ve forgotten about the fact someone is selling your location and ability to people. Home might not be safe.”

Annoyance filled me, mostly because I’d never seen it coming. “Guess I’ll have to relocate.” What I didn’t say? Time to become a hermit now that I’d begun harming people. So what if thus far they deserved it? What if eventually my control slipped and I did it to someone innocent?

“It’s only temporary. I’m going to find out who’s selling your info. While I do, might be a good time for you to get help from someone with your power.”

“Like who?” I asked with an arched brow. “It’s not like I can hire an instructor to give me lessons.”

“You should have a talk with John’s great-grandma.”

“Her power isn’t at all like mine.”

“She sees the future,” Dina insisted.

“Once. Once and done per person. I wish I were so lucky.”

“I like how you assume she never failed before learning how to do that.” Dina’s sarcastic reply.

My lips pinched with annoyance, mostly because she made a good point. At the same time, “You know I’ve tried and tried to get a handle on my power.” I’d done meditation, breathing techniques, and so much more, all to no avail. “What if she can’t help?”

“What if she can?”

“I don’t want to impose on John.”

“I don’t think that man minds. He likes you.”

“He can’t,” I quickly blurted out.

“Why not? Let me guess, you saw him being bad in the sack.”

I blushed. “No.”

“He’s a dick?”

“Hardly. If you must know, I’ve seen a future where we fall in love.”
