My mouth opened, ready to refuse the offer, only… “Do you think she can help me rein in my power?”

He shrugged. “Only one way to find out.”

The very idea filled me with a hope I’d never imagined. “I’d like that.”

“Awesome. Let me know when you’d like to go, and I’ll make arrangements.”

“Don’t you have to ask her first?”

He snorted. “She probably already knows we’re coming.”

“How soon can we visit?” It wasn’t as if I had anything pressing unless going home to hide counted.

“We can leave first thing in the morning.”

“I lost my passport, though.” Buried with the castle on the island.

“Fear not, my magic can give us a hand passing customs.” He waggled his fingers. “Although, do me a favor and run it by your sisters so they don’t hunt me down.”

Ugh, my sisters. They’d probably insist on accompanying us. Maybe it would be a good thing, as it would add a layer between me and John. I needed to fight the allure of the man who came to my rescue and brought food. I’d been hungrier than I realized and in need of someone to listen.

“Don’t worry about my sisters. I’ll handle them.”

“Excellent. I’ll leave a shield over your door to prevent any intrusions, but if you need me, just—” He glanced around before grumbling, “Hold on a second.” He went into my room and emerged a moment later with a pen. He knelt and held it out. “If you need me for any reason, just click the button.” He popped it in and out, the tip of the pen peeking and hiding. “I’ve spelled it to contact me.”

“You think there’ll be more trouble?” I worried my lower lip between my teeth, hating that I couldn’t glimpse into my own future.

“I’ll make sure there isn’t.” As he rose, I could see a cloud of determination around him.

I didn’t need to see to grasp what he planned. “You’re going now to see who hired those thugs.”

“Yup.” He didn’t lie.

“Alone? Anyone willing to hire someone to kidnap someone else isn’t a nice person,” I noted.

“Would it help if I said I was going to enlist the aid of Bane and Enyo?”

“Actually, it does.” I wouldn’t want John to come to harm digging into my problem.

“What about Bane and Enyo?” Dina suddenly emerged onto the balcony, expression stern. “Anyone care to explain why the door is spelled against intrusion?”

I arched a brow. “Which you obviously ignored. Did it ever occur to you I wanted privacy?”

My sister smirked. “Please. We both know you weren’t getting laid. What happened?”

John feigned ignorance, badly. “Nothing.” He kept his word, but he didn’t know my sister the nag.

Dina eyed him. “You’re hiding something.”

I came clean. “Two guys tried to kidnap me. John stopped them and is planning to pay the person who hired them a visit.”

The sudden breeze that whipped my sister’s hair didn’t touch anything else but her eyes. Storm clouds rolled in them as she said in a tight voice, “Who dared?”

“I was going to find out. Care to join?” John offered.

“Oh, I’m coming all right.”

“I planned to ask Bane and Enyo as well, just in case the situation is rougher than expected,” John mentioned.
